I am not the hero in this story.

I am a guide to lead you through the journey of understanding your burnout, taking the time off to address it — in this case, a sabbatical — and design your life to avoid needing that kind of time away, ever again.

In preparing to write, I sought sources on the best way to tell and share stories and happened across Steve Rawling’s Storyteller Tactics and in one particular segment, he shares a few heroes, what those heroes value, and what a guide can provide to aid that hero on their journey. Upon learning about these hero archetypes, I immediately envisioned them as a way to share the journey and approaches — in almost a choose-your-own-adventure style approach! In Rawlings’s world, there are six in all, I invite you to choose your journey and what you seek using the hero (or heroes) who most resonates with who you are.

This is YOUR journey and YOU get to decide what resonates and why. It could be the name of the archetype itself. If you just see and know that you are a “Warrior” or a “Rebel” — rock with it! Maybe you’re drawn to what the hero values, it’s what matters most to you, at your core. For some of you who are reading, it’s the “what you say” portion — you’ve literally said or are often heard saying those words or something like it. Or maybe it’s just in what you need — you found this guide, right here, right now and thought to yourself, “if only someone could give me a [insert corresponding tool] to get past this burnout” and you happened upon this guide and this message.

The point is, this is YOUR journey, YOU get to decide which journey (or journeys) resonate and take what you need.
